Medical Researchers Say Playing Bingo Can Make You Live Longer

June 30th, 2009

Play Bingo, Live Longer. That’s what medical research published in the recent issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests. Medical researchers and scientists believe that by leading a physically and socially active life in old age, the risk of disability is dramatically reduced, by almost two thirds. There is evidence suggesting that the risk of death is also cut by almost 40%.

The research, spearheaded by Doctor Aron S Buchman from the Rush University and Medical Centre in Chicago, is based on extensive data collected from various tests and analysis. It reveals, “Decline in motor function is a consequence of ageing, the data raises the possibility that social engagement can slow motor function decline”.

This follows another clinical study which indicated that an active mind can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s in older people. The extent of mental application required for the game goes a long way and research suggests that deterioration can be controlled for upto a month for every year the mind is active. Over a million people grapple with the malaise of Alzheimer’s in Britain. Researchers also believe that apart from the mental concentration and adrenaline pumping involved, the social interaction also contributes to keeping the mind healthy and agile. With advancing age, promoting mental fitness along with physical activity has been one of the prime focus areas for the NHS in Britain during recent times.

Traditionally, bingo has been seen as a game most preferred by members of the older generation, with industry estimates placing the average age group to be around 65-70 years of age. The social aspect of the game simply cannot be overlooked; bingo has more of a following in the UK than even football or any other major sport. People prefer bingo over other high adrenaline casino games largely because of the socializing involved in bingo clubs. Bingo clubs are where people meet to chat up, get new friends or to simply have a good time.

This research is particularly significant because it reaffirms what hard core bingo loyalists have felt all the time. Online bingo might be more popular these days and land-based bingo clubs might be closing down, more so by every passing day. But one simply cannot discount the social importance of these clubs. Now, with solid clinical research and studies indicating that bingo could have far reaching health and social benefits, perhaps government could revisit the hike in bingo taxes. Savings in healthcare expenditure itself could prove to be a significant point favoring the bingo industry.
