Mecca Bingo Revenues On The Upswing
October 16th, 2009

In some good news for all fans of Mecca Bingo, the Rank group has reported that their interim management report for Q3, 2009 shows that revenue inflows have improved during the 14 weeks. In the 14 weeks ended 4th October, 2009, the company’s improved their inflows by more than 2% versus the previous period in 2008.
Even though the flagship bingo brand of the Rank group, Mecca Bingo, reported significantly lower traffic in their web portal during the period, the average revenue per user showed a marginal increase. Rank Group’s management estimates suggest that the revenues from Mecca Bingo have gone up by almost 3% year-on-year as compared to the similar 14 weeks in 2008. Overall, the Rank group also reported slightly higher revenues for this quarter. The total revenues for the group went up by 1% during the period even though customer footfall cam down by 3%. Average revenue per consumer was up slightly by 4% which was credible considering the difficult economic times prevailing. Rank officials attribute this increase in spending thanks to the multiple new slot machines and side games which have been introduced that are proving to be quite popular among the players. However, the effect of the amendments introduced to the Gambling Act which has positively impacted the operating profit by improving cash flows cannot be sidelined.
Mecca Bingo has also pioneered a new concept of a hybrid entertainment center at Beeston which places the focus on having fun while playing bingo. Titled ‘Full House’, this bingo hall has witnessed unprecedented footfall and player traffic-some estimates suggest that the total footfall in Mecca Bingo’s Beeston hall is almost equal to the total footfalls of the other five bingo halls in the area put together. This success has spurred the group to convert many of their existing bingo halls to similar hybrid bingo halls. Among these is the ‘Catford’ club, which is all set to be re-opened after a major overhaul in December this year. Many more clubs are also on the anvil of conversion and the group plans to complete this exercise by early 2010.
The Rank Group has commented in their interim management report, “The group’s positive trading performance reflects the success of the actions we have taken to improve the value and quality of the service that we offer our customers and thus to grow our market share. In line with the plans we set out at our half yearly results, we will continue to invest in our businesses, with a particular focus on the growth of the G casino brand and the further development of the ‘Full House’ concept in Mecca Bingo.”
