Mecca Bingo Launches Heels Into Wheels At Crewe
October 22nd, 2009

The reputed online bingo portal, Mecca Bingo, recently announced that it had launched the second year of its Heels Into Wheels campaign at Crewe. This is a very special charitable effort organized by the UK gaming giant that encourages people to donate their old shoes at Mecca Bingo’s collection points in an effort to raise funds for mobility equipment for children.
“This latest fundraising scheme is part of the very successful Mecca Wheel Difference campaign – now in its second year here at Crewe. We’ve set up a collection point in the club for people to drop in their old footwear and are looking forward to collecting mountains of shoes – but we’d advise customers to bring an extra pair to wear home,” said Manager Gill Clark.
The second year of the campaign first began last month and the enthusiasm for Heels Into Wheels is slowly spreading to all the Mecca Bingo clubs in the UK.
Ruth Owen, Chief Executive of Whizz-Kidz, had this to say: “We are absolutely thrilled with the enthusiasm and inventiveness of all Mecca team and club members, and for raising over a quarter of a million pounds to support young wheelchair-users’ independence in 2008 alone.”
“Disabled children stand virtually no chance of getting a powered wheelchair on the NHS. Through Mecca Bingo’s funding of powered and manual wheelchairs and training, more children now have the opportunities previously denied them. Please help us raise even more money to make real differences to young lives,” she added.
Both the Mecca Bingo and Whizz-Kidz foundation encourage people to visit any one of the Mecca Bingo clubs in their locality and drop off their old shoes. Any and all types of shoes are allowed, whether they are high heels, boots, trainers, slingbacks, sandals or shoes.
This scheme was officially announced by Theresa May, Maidenhead MP, and Shadow Secretary for Work and Pensions. Theresa May made the announcement while standing near a giant metal shopping cart designed by Edd China, an inventor from the Discovery Channel. The cart is to be filled with old shoes for the cause.
“This is a great scheme and I am pleased to be able to donate some of my own shoes to kick it off! What a marvelous idea to recycle people’s shoes to ensure disabled children can be more mobile. Whizz-Kidz is a very good charity and I am delighted to be part of this initiative,” she said.
