Understanding RSS

Whether the term RSS is translated to mean Rich Site Syndication or Really Simple Syndication, the fact remains that today the RSS mechanism is the only way net surfers can keep upto date with the latest bingo news, blog posts and other happenings on the world wide web. There are several hundred writers who write on topics of specific interest for the users and keeping track of these in the absence of a mechanized system is virtually impossible. Syndication was first practised in the news print media among editors who wished to introduce far more content and matter from other publications in their papers to garner wider readership. Today most web blogs and sites offer the RSS notification system so that net users can access the latest posts at their fingerprints.

Why use RSS

As mentioned earlier, it is virtually impossible for net users to keep track of the posts made to all their favourite web blogs and sites, as well as time consuming to visit each site and check whether a post has been made. An RSS feed delivers a brief text headline to a post on the site which will have an embedded link that will take the users directly to the page. As far as website owners and designers are concerned, RSS feeds can significantly improve the traffic to their website. In a recent study conducted for a Software Marketing Resource website, it was illustrated that the web traffic peaked every time the site’s RSS feed was updated.

What is RSS

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. First conceived by Netscape to ensure that content would get delivered to their site automatically every day, today several websites have adopted this method to ensure wider and more loyal readership for their pages. RSS is basically akin to a message alert service-every time a new post or article is added to a subscribed page, the link to the post along with a brief text heading is delivered to the users’ prescribed web page. Those who find the heading interesting and wish to explore more, can easily click on the link to be taken to the web page. Of course, for the RSS feed to be delivered to the web page, the website must offer the service in the first place. Most of the time RSS feeds are provided free of cost. An example of the RSS feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/free-online-bingo. Clicking on the link helps users to add content from the online bingo blog to their favourite feed reader or browser web page.

How to use RSS

Subscribing to an RSS feed is really simple. Supported web pages most often display a small, orange button at the right end of the address bar. RSS feeds are composed using XML (Extensible Markup Language) and so users need an appropriate feed reader to actually access the feed. A feed reader helps decode the XML and also combs through the subscribed websites for updates on a regular basis. Feed readers or aggregators may be either standalone like Feed Demon, add-ons like Pluck or browser inbuilt. Standalone feed readers help customize the feeds to suit individual needs whereas add-ons are more programme specific and enhance compatibility with installed programs. Users can also add the RSS feed to their home page using embedded feed burners in browsers like Mozilla, Safari and Internet Explorer. Google Reader is another popular feed reader used by people across the globe.

Once the feed burner is installed, users can access any updates made to the content in the site. The feed burner scans through the site and pulls any new information for the benefit of the readers.
